The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveller, long I stood
And loooked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.

사람은 자주 선택에 기로에 서게 된다.
햄릿처럼 죽느냐 사느냐의 문제는 아니더라도,
오랜 시간 고민을 하게 만드는 선택의 순간은 늘 다가오기 마련이다.
고민끝에 겨우 한 길을 선택을 하고 나면 한동안 홀가분하다가도,
문득 포기했던 길에 대해 다시 생각해보며 미련을 갖기도 한다.
위의 시는 내가 한 때 가장 좋아했던 시이다.
제목은 "The Road Not Taken" 번역하면 "가보지 못한 길"이란 뜻이다.
숲속의 양갈래길에서 어느 길을 택해야하나 한참을 머뭇거리다가,
사람들이 덜 다니는 길을 택한 후, 다시 발걸음을 재촉한다.
가보지 못한 길은 언젠가는 꼭 가보리라 맘먹어보지만,
길은 또 다른 길로 이어지는 것이기에
한 번 선택한 길을 걷다보면 다시 원점으로 돌아오기란 결코 쉽지가 않다.
